Chautauqua is back for 2022!

by jlcollinsnh 20 Comments

After two long years of being sidelined with covid issues, like the rest of the world, Chautauqua is finally back. And we are returning to South America — this time: Colombia!

We sent Alan and Katie there on a scouting mission for several months last year – tough job I know, but somebody has (gets?) to do it. They came up with an incredible venue.

As always, Chautauqua means bringing together a small group of people to spend a week in a very cool place…

…eating great food…

…and having cool conversations…

…sometimes in warm places…

…and, of course, you will have a comfortable retreat.

There will be excursions to see some of the surrounding area, presentations and Q&A from your four speaker/hosts and the opportunity to have a one-on-one private session with the speaker of your choice.

Most importantly, you’ll get to hang out with your fellow attendees who, if past Chautauquas are any guide, will be an incredibly diverse and facinating group who all share being on this incredible Financial Independence journey.

Curious as to what past attendees have to say? Here you go!

If you are curious as to where we’ll be, here’s a little history of Villa de Leyva.

Dates:

Week 1 — September 3-10

Week 2 — September 10-17

Speakers:

As always, for each Chautauqua week we invite a special guest speaker and I am particularly thrilled with the two we have for this year. Both have been on our radar for some time and I can’t wait to hang out with them.

Week 1:

Doc G. of the Earn and Invest Podcast and author of the soon-to-be released book Taking Stock: A Hospice Doctor’s Advice on Financial Independence, Building Wealth, and Living a Regret-Free Life

Week 2:

Ken Okoroafor of The Humble Penny and the creator of the Financial Joy Academy

Both Weeks will also feature…

Kristy & Bryce of Millennial Revolution

Alan Donegan founder of the Rebel Business School

and me

If you want to know more about us, here it is.

One-on-One

Each attendee will have the opportunity to select the speaker of their choice for a private one-on-one session during the week.

Vaccinations

You must be vaccinated to enter Colombia.

Signing up

If you want to come, sign up here.

When you arrive in Colombia, we’ll be there to meet you. From there, we take care of everything.

Everything is included in the price except alcohol and any gifts or souvenirs you might chose to buy. On Friday there will be optional tours available at extra cost if you wish, or you can hang out at the hotel with us. At week’s end, we’ll return you to the airport for your flight home, and our tearful goodbyes.

Hope to see you there!

Sold Out

Every year, Chautauqua sells out faster than the year before. This time it took 18 hours.

Addendum

From the comments below…

Q: Would you ever consider recording some of the keynote speakers and posting links? Even short term links? So many of your followers would love the chance to see these talks, and for those what are able attend in person they know that the networking and tribe-building have immeasurable value, so I don’t think it would take away from the attendees to do this. Please consider 🙂 Jerri

A:

Hi Jerri…

The short answer is “no”.

We have been asked and have considered it before, but our feeling is that the recording process would be intrusive and would break the flow of the event. The people attending are our priority.

That said, it is important to note (as I have in the past) that there is no “secret sauce” for FI success we only disclose at Chautauquas. Indeed, I have a particular loathing for ‘gurus’ who lure people in with a free seminar or video with the sole purpose of selling them expensive courses that then supposedly reveal the ‘secret’.

I, and all the other speakers, have made our ideas freely available with our own books, on our blogs and/or podcasts and as guests on others.

While there are certainly unique moments at Chautauqua, the core ideas are the same. It is more about building connections and, as I say, “going to cool places to hang out with cool people and to have cool conversations.”

Hope to see you there sometime!

JL

  • Talent Stacker is a resource that I learned about through my work with Jonathan and Brad at ChooseFI, and first heard about Salesforce as a career option in an episode where we featured Bradley Rice on the Podcast. In that episode, Bradley shared how he reached FI quickly thanks to his huge paychecks and discipline in keeping his expenses low. Jonathan teamed up with Bradley to build Talent Stacker, and they have helped more than 1,000 students from all walks of life complete the program and land jobs like clockwork, earning double or even triple their old salaries using a Salesforce certification to break into a no-code tech career.
  • Credit Cards are like chain saws. Incredibly useful. Incredibly dangerous. Resolve to pay in full each month and never carry a balance. Do that and they can be great tools. Here are some of the very best for travel hacking, cash back and small business rewards.
  • Personal Capital is a free tool to manage and evaluate your investments. With great visuals you can track your net worth, asset allocation, and portfolio performance, including costs. At a glance you'll see what's working and what you might want to change. Here's my full review.
  • Betterment is my recommendation for hands-off investors who prefer a DIFM (Do It For Me) approach. It is also a great tool for reaching short-term savings goals. Here is my Betterment Review

Oh man! I can’t believe it already sold out.
I’m originally from Colombia and I’m here on vacation right now! Villa de Leyva is beautiful.
As a tax CPA, the date would be a bit tricky but I do have to make it to a Chautauqua one day.
So glad you all chose Colombia!
    Hope you like it.

    Hello Mr Collins,

Very glad it sold out cos it makes it easier not to feel I am missing out just cos I ain’t “vaccinated”!

Let’s hope the world has returned to its senses by the time I jump to buy my place.

In the meantime, for 2023 and all future years, please consider locations in a countries which do not have arbitrary, disproportionate, unnecessary, inhumane and totally unscientific laws in place! Mexico? Sweden? The list is growing!

[whispers in your ear] … then again, I might have bought my latest “jab certificate” with some of that Bitcoin I bought back in 2017 😉 …

    Enjoy your time in Colombia.

      Ladies and gentlemen, I give you – – –

      NORWAY!

      They know the meaning of

      Å gjøre noen en bjornetjeneste

      Make Chautauqua there in 2023.

It’s expensive, but we all know that’s a relative term.

      Freedom ain’t free, right?

I was hoping for Ecuador, but Columbia sounded lovely as well… unfortunately I didn’t see the post before it sold out. How amazing for you, all the other speakers, and those who got tickets. I’m sure it will be an amazing experience and I look forward to hearing all about it here. 🙂

Looking forward to Cha 2023. My oldest daughter is getting married in September, and my wife and I are headed to Patagonia in October. So this year’s event would have been a bit tough without quitting my job. 50/50 I’ll be fully retired in time for Cha 2023, 100% for Cha 2024, but I’d kind of like to go and hang out once BEFORE hitting the eject button. 😉

I’m cool if you want to go back to Columbia in 23. In fact, I think I’d really love it there.

    Hey JL!!

I love your work and book and had a question!

What are your thoughts on SEP (Simplified Employee Pension) IRAs? Somebody told me how they can hold more than the $6000 dollar limit of the other iras, while also acting like a traditional ira. Admittedly, it seems only worth it for small business owners who are also the only employee in their business. I’m a 29 yr therapist with my my own practice with 65k in my ira and taxable accounts and trying to adhere to all the principles of your book. Couldn’t find anything in your book about SEPs so figured I’d ask you here. Thank you for all that you do, JL!!!
