Vicki comes to Chautauqua: United Kingdom

Here’s some awesome Chautauqua UK news:

Vicki Robin, the author of…

…one of the key books that got this whole FI movement, well, moving will be joining us this August as a speaker at Chautauqua: United Kingdom and hanging out for the week!

On the off chance you don’t know, Your Money or Your Life is a classic. It is one of the earliest guides to reaching financial independence and to living the FI life. It is widely considered one of the best and, I’m proud to say, it is the book most often ordered from Amazon with my own.

She is, as Kristy of Millennial Revolution puts it, “…the Eve of “Adam & Eve” fame of the entire FI movement!”

Vicki is not only a trail-blazer and writer, she is an accomplished speaker. Here she is giving her TedTalk…

(Nobody’s asked me to give a damn TedTalk)

But come to Chautauqua and you’ll get to see Vicki in action, along with me and the three other originally planned speakers.

All four of us (Vicki soon?) have been guests on the Mad Fientist’s podcast. You can give a listen to any and all here:

Millennial Revolution – Denouncing the Cult of Homeownership

PopUp Business School – The Right Way to Start a Business

JL Collins – The Simple Path to Wealth

Including The Mad Fientist himself…

Mad Fientist – 1500 Days Podcast Takeover

Here’s Kristy’s take on this cool news:

BIG Chautauqua Announcement (damn, I love her writing!)

And my own original post with more details:

Chautauqua – United Kingdom: August 2017

OK, time for some random pictures of The Queen’s digs:

We’re coming, your Highness!

Want to join us? Here are the details:

Chautauqua — United Kingdom: August 12-19; official website

On the website you’ll find the full schedulethe scoop on your chance to have a private meeting with the speaker of your choice and stuff about us, your hosts and speakers. Oh, and how to register.

Hope to see you there!

Important Resources

  • Talent Stacker is a resource that I learned about through my work with Jonathan and Brad at ChooseFI, and first heard about Salesforce as a career option in an episode where they featured Bradley Rice on the Podcast. In that episode, Bradley shared how he reached FI quickly thanks to his huge paychecks and discipline in keeping his expenses low. Jonathan teamed up with Bradley to build Talent Stacker, and they have helped more than 1,000 students from all walks of life complete the program and land jobs like clockwork, earning double or even triple their old salaries using a Salesforce certification to break into a no-code tech career.
  • Credit Cards are like chain saws. Incredibly useful. Incredibly dangerous. Resolve to pay in full each month and never carry a balance. Do that and they can be great tools. Here are some of the very best for travel hacking, cash back and small business rewards.
  • Empower is a free tool to manage and evaluate your investments. With great visuals you can track your net worth, asset allocation, and portfolio performance, including costs. At a glance you'll see what's working and what you might want to change. Here's my full review.
  • Betterment is my recommendation for hands-off investors who prefer a DIFM (Do It For Me) approach. It is also a great tool for reaching short-term savings goals. Here is my Betterment Review
  • NewRetirement offers cool tools to help guide you in answering the question: Do I have enough money to retire? And getting started is free. Sign up and you will be offered two paths into their retirement planner. I was also on their podcast and you can check that out here:Video version, Podcast version.
  • Tuft & Needle (T&N) helps me sleep at night. They are a very cool company with a great product. Here’s my review of what we are currently sleeping on: Our Walnut Frame and Mint Mattress.

Oh mahh gahhh, this is great news! I already wanted to go to the Chautauqua and now I’m super sad that I’ll be missing it! I hope we can see a lot of good stuff come out of Vicki’s attendance!

It would awesome to have you there, Mrs. PP…

      …someday!

I think we’ll be seeing a lot more of Vicki going forward. After a well deserved break, she’s returning to the conversation and she is working on an updated version of YMOYL.

Think of Chautauqua UK as her coming out party. 😉

Is Chautauqua becoming a travelling thing?
Ever coming to the US? (or would it defeat the purpose not being far and away).
I would like to make it one day. Plans, plans…

    • jlcollinsnh says

Possibly, but the challenge is it needs someone on the ground who knows the location and who can organize all the logistics. It is a tough job. Cheryl has done it wonderfully in Ecuador, where she lives.

At the last Chautauqua there I got to meet two Brits, Alan and Katie, who were attendees and perfect for the role. Fortunately, when I suggested it, they were as enthusiastic about doing it as I was about having them.

While we seek out cool and interesting locations, the purpose is not to have it “far and away” After all, what is far and away to you is in the backyard of others.

Wow, awesome that Vicki is getting back into the FI scene (traveling to multiple continents for stuff; maybe we can get her to a Camp Mustache sometime–along with YOU), and coming out with a new edition of YMOYL! That book was foundational for so many of us. Great news! 🙂

    • jlcollinsnh says

Yep, and awesome our Chautauquas can play a small role.

Camp Mustache would be perfect, and I do hope to make it to one. (So, please keep inviting me!)

  4. Vicki@MakeSmarterDecisions says

Wow – when I first saw the title of the email early this morning, I thought I had one a trip 😉 It was an amazing line-up to begin with and now this? I read and connected with YMOYL at just about the time I was realizing I was FI. It helped me dig deep into what mattered most to me and better recognize the life energy and time relationship. It was almost the “permission” I needed to walk away from the golden handcuffs of my full-time job. If the kids weren’t both heading off to college that week, we’d be crossing the big pond for sure!

What a classic. I wish I wasn’t working so I could join. Soon enough though. It’s so important to have people to motivate us, as most of us know few, if any, people in person that are interested in early to extremely early retirement. I have been interested in financial independence since at least 18, which was 1994.

Joe Dominguez, co-author of Your Money or Your life, retired at 31 in 1969. Unfortunately, he passed away in 1997. Fortunately for the rest of us, his ideas and out-of-the-box thinking live on through Vickie, their book, and Joe’s live recorded seminar, Transforming Your Relationship with Money, available on CD or tape. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to Joe’s voice and felt a special connection with him. What an amazing guy and he was an excellent speaker…intelligent, funny, & frank. RIP Joe.

Just an FYI on your republic wireless affiliate link: the base plan has been increased to $15/month. You are probably grandfathered in at $10/month.
