jlcollinsnh gets a new suit

Suit Hollywood-drape-suit

Welcome to our still classic new look!

Just about three years ago jlcollinsnh.com underwent its first redesign and the sweeping changes you have become used to were ushered in.

There were lots of reasons for this but the tipping point was when Sean over at Renewable Wealth, in the nicest possible way, said

“…your current design makes my eyes bleed.”

Hard to hear, but true at the time.

With that critique ringing in my ears, the goal became a design of “stark elegance” and, not meaning to sound immodest, I think we hit the mark. At least no one has again complained of their eyes bleeding.

The further good news is that we got most of the functional things right that time as well and so, if the new changes you see today don’t strike you as all that dramatic, well they are not meant to be.

Indeed, our goal for this new version was to maintain a similar look and feel of the old version but updated to work functionally better across more devices. If we’ve hit our mark:

  • Site should work much better on both mobile phones and tablets
  • With some typography improvements you should find the site easier to read
  • Some pages (especially the home page) should load much faster

You’ll also notice the main navigation has been cleaned up a bit. There are now fewer buttons across the top and one has been added.

New:

Books shows some of the recent reads I’ve enjoyed, plus a few past favorites as they occur to me. This is something I’ve included at the end of recent posts and it has gotten a nice reception. Plus it’s fun for me to occasionally look back and remember.

Gone:

Make My Day, which simply outlived its usefulness.

UraniumC a link to my other, long neglected blog. If and when I turn my attention to it again I’ll let you know but for now it doesn’t need to be here. However it does still have that eye-bleeding design if you want to check it out.

As Seen On, has moved to the bottom of the Right Hand Column Sidebar where it can showcase some cool logos.

Speaking of the Right Hand Column Sidebar and working our way down…

At the top, first in line, is an invitation to subscribe. Because, well, I want you to! That way when I put up a new post you’ll hear about it. And, since I don’t do that all that often, I can promise not to overload your inbox.

Search function

This works surprisingly well and I use it all the time myself. Mostly in answering your questions in the comments when I know I’ve said something about it and can’t remember where. Something getting more common in my dotage.

Important Resources

Like my Reading List, this is something I have been adding to the end of posts recently and that has gotten a good response.

These are the few companies that I routinely recommend and, except for Vanguard, they are affiliate partners. That means if you chose to link to them from this blog and then accept their product or service, the blog earns a commission.

Please note that, while I have selected these carefully, even they are not necessarily right for everybody in every circumstance. Note that in each case you’ll find a link to my post about them. In it you’ll find my unvarnished opinion.

Support jlcollinsnh

Gratifyingly, this blog has grown substantially over the now 5 years it has been around. But the cloud in that silver lining is that the cost of operating it has grown as well. This is why I now have the affiliate partners mentioned above. But the truth is there are very few companies, products and services I am willing to recommend and I will never feature any just for the money.

The other source of revenue is the Google Adsense banner ad you see at the top of each page. While effective, I have no control over the ads that show up there and the truth is sometimes they make me cringe. You, of course, recognize them for what they are. But I’d still rather see them gone.

So this Buy at Amazon button is an experiment. The beauty is that if you use it to go to Amazon this blog earns a commission on whatever you buy and the prices to you are the same.

So if you are going to shop Amazon anyway, and you want a cost-free way to support the blog, please go to them thru me. Of course, you don’t want to shop there or buy stuff just to support the blog. But I didn’t need to tell you that, did I?

Recent – Favorites – Comments

As before, here you’ll find a quick reference to some of the posts around here (most recent and favorites), but now in a cleaner easier to use format. Plus it will show you the posts with the latest comments.

Categories…

…organizes the various posts by topic for your browsing pleasure.

Archives…

…does the same by year and month

Blogroll…

…features a very few of my personal favorites.

As Seen On…

…replaces the button that used to be on the top and the link takes you to a list of podcasts, articles, videos and interviews where I have been honored to be featured.

Finally, in the main section of the Home Page, you’ll now see at a glance brief introductions to recent posts. Before each entire post was presented, making a quick overview for recent history impossible. Plus it just looks cooler!

None of this could have happened without the hard work, creativity, patience and perseverance of my newest personal hero, Lucas. If that name sounds familiar, you likely remember him as the savior who rescued the blog last Spring when its growing readership had it crashing repeatedly and the hosting service threatening to shut it down altogether.

After months of frustration and dead ends, Lucas arrived on the scene riding a snow-white charger (I recall it as yesterday!), slew the various dragons and evil knights and brought peace and tranquility to my kingdom. Oh, and we kicked that pesky host to the curb.

I was hoping, in turn, to bring him fame and business with a nice mention and link here. But, alas, like many great and noble champions, he is a shy and retiring sort already with more work than he can handle.

Still, if your need is great and your heart is pure, let me know and maybe I can persuade him to accept an introduction.

Enjoy the new format and should you encounter any issues let us know in the comments. Please be sure to include what device and browser you are using as this will be very helpful.

The comments are also the place to heap your praise upon the new design.

On an unrelated note:

Personal Capital special Valentine’s Day promotion:

Go to the link above and you’ll see a narrow banner about this across the top.

Any new user who signs up between Friday, Feb 5th and Valentine’s Day Feb 14th is eligible to win a free trip for two to Hawaii. That’s right. A free trip to Hawaii! The prize is $2000 for roundtrip airfare and $1000 for accommodations. Any new user is eligible, so long as you link an investment account. It doesn’t matter how much money you have — you just need to sign up and link.

Signing up and using their service is free.

Even so, you don’t want to do this just to enter a contest. That’s not the jlcollinsnh way! 🙂 But if you are thinking of giving them a try anyway, now is a good time. Good luck!

And a note on Art:

I love using original art in my posts. If you are an artist and would like to see your work featured here, let me know. Anytime I use one of your pieces you’ll get a credit and a link to your own site.

I look forward to seeing your stuff!

Important Resources

  • Talent Stacker is a resource that I learned about through my work with Jonathan and Brad at ChooseFI, and first heard about Salesforce as a career option in an episode where they featured Bradley Rice on the Podcast. In that episode, Bradley shared how he reached FI quickly thanks to his huge paychecks and discipline in keeping his expenses low. Jonathan teamed up with Bradley to build Talent Stacker, and they have helped more than 1,000 students from all walks of life complete the program and land jobs like clockwork, earning double or even triple their old salaries using a Salesforce certification to break into a no-code tech career.
  • Credit Cards are like chain saws. Incredibly useful. Incredibly dangerous. Resolve to pay in full each month and never carry a balance. Do that and they can be great tools. Here are some of the very best for travel hacking, cash back and small business rewards.
  • Empower is a free tool to manage and evaluate your investments. With great visuals you can track your net worth, asset allocation, and portfolio performance, including costs. At a glance you'll see what's working and what you might want to change. Here's my full review.
  • Betterment is my recommendation for hands-off investors who prefer a DIFM (Do It For Me) approach. It is also a great tool for reaching short-term savings goals. Here is my Betterment Review
  • NewRetirement offers cool tools to help guide you in answering the question: Do I have enough money to retire? And getting started is free. Sign up and you will be offered two paths into their retirement planner. I was also on their podcast and you can check that out here:Video version, Podcast version.

    Congrats Jim!

I’m checking out the upgrades now on my mobile device????

One thing that does not need to be updated is your continued great information and counsel!

For what it is worth – I think it’s pretty cool of you – to comment on the need to advertise due to costs –

I always found your site to be more “organic” with a true feeling of compassion and experience- it reads real to me – for that —-I am one (of many ) grateful readers

    Have a great night!

    Chris

Nice, I told you that over a year ago(in a less harsh way). Looks like you did all the changes I wanted for you, everything looks really good. The biggest thing, as you planned, is you should see a lot less overhead on your server now.

    • jlcollinsnh says

      Thanks Kyle…

I frequently need more and longer prodding than most. 😉

As for less overhead on the server, if there was planning for that the credit goes entirely to my man Lucas! 🙂

  3. Adam says

It looks like your RSS feed has started clipping the contents, which means people like me that use readers have to click through to the site to read the contents, which besides being annoying may mean no access if the device isn’t online at the time. Think it started with this post.

    • jlcollinsnh says

      Hi Adam…

This was an intentional change designed to send readers to the blog for its content. Better for the blog and a common practice in my experience with the other blogs I personally read.

That said, none of this is carved in stone and if the feedback on it mirrors yours we’ll certainly consider changing back.

Thanks for weighing in on it!

      • Bill says

Also not a fan of the clipped RSS feed. In my experience it’s not common except for sites heavy on the ads and wanting to juice the viewership numbers

      • simeon says

A lot of websites have RSS feeds that publish just the title and first sentence or two of a new post. So, followers know when a new post is available and still have to come to the website to read it.

May I humbly recommend such a change?

-an RSS follower who thought you had retired (from blogging)

          • Lucas says

            Adam, Simeon, and Bill,

Thanks for the feedback. We’ve turned the Full feed back on for RSS and Email.

Also, the Feedburner RSS feed should now be fixed. (You may have just gotten several older posts at once in your feed.)

The Feedburner Feed was not updating because of a caching issue, but should be fixed now. Please let us know if you have any problems.

  4. Mr. FC says

Reading on an iPad, looks great Jim! Glad we have a way to support you other than just making witty comments on your entries…????

Look forward to the book. 80 and sunny in CA today, hope you swing by again soon.

    • jlcollinsnh says

      Thanks Mr. FC!

Witty comments are always welcome here, although I can’t come up with one just now. 🙁

Glad you are glad to have other ways to support the blog.

Just curious. Of the three (the shop Amazon button, doing business with my affiliates or the Google Adsense ads) which appeals to you most?

      • Kevin says

I’m not FC, but I’ll comment on that one and say that in general the Amazon button. At this point the majority of things that I purchase probably come from Amazon, and it’s an easy way to support your blog without any negative consequence to me. The affiliates would be next, but one of the rare things that you recommend has to be one of the rare things that I think that I need so that support would be much more infrequent.

        • Steve says

I’ll second the Amazon links. As an Amazon Prime member, I also do pretty much all my shopping through them, so I’d be pretty quick to buy an item through an affiliate link.

        • jlcollinsnh says

          Thanks, Steve…

          I appreciate that!

Truth is, so far, the Amazon button has been a bit of a disappointment.

I’m not entirely surprised. My guess is, even for those who would support the blog by using it, it is easy to forget about when you decide to head over to Amazon.

      • jlcollinsnh says

        Thanks Kevin…

You put your finger on exactly the problem with generating revenue from affiliate links.

Many bloggers solve this by having lots and lots (and lots) of affiliates.

My problem is there are very few companies and products I’m willing to recommend.

I have high hopes for the Amazon button. 🙂

    • jlcollinsnh says

      Thanks HP!

Just checked out your pictures. Some very cool and offbeat stuff you got there.

I’ll have to find an opportunity to use something.

      Thanks for the link!

  5. ds says

looks great! one comment I have is that from the homepage, there are no dates shown of when the article was published. with some of the recurring things like Q&A and others, it makes it a bit confusing to remember which I’ve already read.

    • jlcollinsnh says

      Thanks ds!

      This was an intentional change.

I’m told that in this age of internet speed people tend to discount what wasn’t written yesterday. Since many of my best posts (Stock Series) are older having the date is an obstacle for some readers.

That said, you can still check out the date by looking at the URL address or the first couple of comments.

  6. Jian says

Love the redesign, esp. the homepage now showing an overview of recent posts!

Also so happy to see a “Books” tab, finally! Thanks for recommending “Sapiens” – I only read the first 2 chapters before having to put it on hold to go on my (one small backpack only) cycling trip, but was thoroughly intrigued. It’s not necessarily a happy read, but the writing is lucid, engaging and thought-provoking, even entertaining despite the weight of the subject. Can’t wait to read the rest, as soon as I get to check it out again from the library (of course there’s a queue for it).

Side note – I’ve not been receiving new posting notices for the last couple of posts as I used to, so I re-subscribed. Perhaps you’d want to send an email to your long-time subscribers to alert them about re-subscribing?

    • jlcollinsnh says

      Thanks Jian…

      Glad you like it!

Especially the “Books” tab. I think that will be fun. Assuming I remember to update it. 🙂

I’ll check into the subscription thing. Thanks for letting me know!

  7. jager says

    Mr. Collins,
Love the new look of the site. I’m sure the facelift will make the content here even more accessible for my 20-something subordinates to whom I’ve recommended your stock series.

Your website is valuable enough that I suspect many of us would make direct donations for its upkeep. Barring that, I think the Amazon link is perfect. We will certainly be using it (and my wife loves Amazon, so hopefully you will be well-served, too! :)).

thanks again for all your work,

    Jager

    • jlcollinsnh says

      Thanks Jager!

Fortunately Lucas is closer to that age group than I and he’s been able to provide valuable guidance.

We thought about the idea of a donation button and it is still a possibility depending how the other revenue generators pan out. I’m not entirely comfortable with the idea, but that’s probably just my internal quirk.

  8. Bill and Craig says

    Hey Jim and Lucas,

The layout of the new website looks great!

The information layout is much cleaner and easier to read and understand, like how it’s grouped. Keep up the great work on FI and Early Retirement as I know you will. You are a resource that should not be overlooked in ones journey.

    • jlcollinsnh says

      Thanks guys!

Lucas deserves all the credit for the new look. I just type some words in once in a while…. 🙂

  9. Paul says

Hi Jim, just a comment to say the new design looks great.

    I love the large print!

    Keep up the great work,

    Paul in Wisconsin

Jim, I just tried to subscribe to get your posts via email and there was some type of error? I received the email that was generated, but when I clicked on it to verify (it took me to my wordpress account as it should have) it said there was a site error?

    What to do?
