The Podcast: You can hear me now.

A few weeks back a guy calling himself The Mad Fientist showed up in the comments section here on jlcollinsnh.  He started by linking back to my post.  As if the name alone wasn’t enough, that got me poking around, and enjoying, his site.

One of the cool things he does is podcast conversations with other financial bloggers, starting with one of my favorites, Mr. Money Mustache.  So when he invited me to be his second interview ever, well what could I say but:

Yes!

I hope you have as much fun listening to it as I did doing it.  Here’s the link:

Oh, and when your done you might want to check out his site, if only to learn what a Mad Fientist is.  For now all I can tell you is I’ve got my Halloween costume all planned out.

Important Resources

  • Talent Stacker is a resource that I learned about through my work with Jonathan and Brad at ChooseFI, and first heard about Salesforce as a career option in an episode where they featured Bradley Rice on the Podcast. In that episode, Bradley shared how he reached FI quickly thanks to his huge paychecks and discipline in keeping his expenses low. Jonathan teamed up with Bradley to build Talent Stacker, and they have helped more than 1,000 students from all walks of life complete the program and land jobs like clockwork, earning double or even triple their old salaries using a Salesforce certification to break into a no-code tech career.
  • Credit Cards are like chain saws. Incredibly useful. Incredibly dangerous. Resolve to pay in full each month and never carry a balance. Do that and they can be great tools. Here are some of the very best for travel hacking, cash back and small business rewards.
  • Empower is a free tool to manage and evaluate your investments. With great visuals you can track your net worth, asset allocation, and portfolio performance, including costs. At a glance you'll see what's working and what you might want to change. Here's my full review.
  • Betterment is my recommendation for hands-off investors who prefer a DIFM (Do It For Me) approach. It is also a great tool for reaching short-term savings goals. Here is my Betterment Review
  • NewRetirement offers cool tools to help guide you in answering the question: Do I have enough money to retire? And getting started is free. Sign up and you will be offered two paths into their retirement planner. I was also on their podcast and you can check that out here:Video version, Podcast version.
  • Tuft & Needle (T&N) helps me sleep at night. They are a very cool company with a great product. Here’s my review of what we are currently sleeping on: Our Walnut Frame and Mint Mattress.

    Hey Jim,

Nice interview with the Mad Fientist. I have enjoyed the blog, as its a nice mix of personal finance and world exploration.

Sounds like you have a great brand with the F-You money.

One suggestion, when the Fientist announced your website address, it sounded like you should look for something simpler to remember. Maybe your readers can weigh in on a snappier title, but not something too crude.

Keep up the fantastic, intriguing posts.

      Thanks Josh!

Looking back, clearly I choose the wrong name for the blog. The idea was to write it for friends and family and jlcollinsnh worked in that it let those folks know it was me.

What I didn’t expect, but very much appreciate, is that it would find an audience far beyond that.

Lately, I’ve been giving some thought as to where to take the blog from here. That might mean a name change and I’d love to hear readers’ ideas.

    Good stuff Jim!

I see a guest appearance on CNN (Your Money), or on Bloomberg TV in your future!

    Hope all is well.

I remember buying a small cap stock back in the Christmas of 1998. It more than quadrupled in less than a month. I thought I was going to be a millionaire in a month. I was also smart enough to lock in most of the 40k profit before stock crashed like a rock.

But, I lost most of the profit in another hot stock. This taught me a life lesson — you can’t get rich quick with these hot small cap stocks. I stay away from small cap after that experience.

I thought it was funny that I heard you went through a similar experience with a stock that tripled from $6.

Now, I focus more on what I call revolutionary stocks — big cap companies that are poised to change the way we live. Peter Lynch believed in buying these stocks that you can relate to on a personal basis rather than some esoteric study or speculation.

Great interview, my friend. I enjoyed every bit of your wisdom.

This was great, Jim. It’s great to hear the voice behind the blog, finally. Keep up the good work, and thanks for writing, as always.
